Wartime Oral History Project

Thank you for your interest in "Scrapbook of Heroes".  The men and women of the Prince William County Police Department have good reason to be proud of their military heritage.  Their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles made incredible sacrifices that quite literally saved the world.  I thoroughly enjoyed the research, the writing of the manuscript and meeting many of the veterans profiled in the book.  While working on the project I found that several of the families of the deceased veterans did not know many details regarding their relative's military service.  It became evident there was a need to provide a service to assist veterans with properly recording their stories; which in turn would allow their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren access to their tales of service and sacrifice.

Several months into this project I learned that the American Wartime Museum had chosen a location to build their site within Prince William County, Virginia - not but three miles from my home.  As I read more I discovered that the Museum would have a Veterans Recording Studio where veterans could record their stories on film.  Thrilled at this concept, I contacted Craig Stewart, President and CEO of the Wartime Museum.  We discussed launching an Oral History Project prior to the Museum's opening in 2014.  We exchanged ideas and several meetings later Mr. Stewart was kind enough to appoint me as the manager of the Wartime Oral History Project.

The Wartime Oral History Project will match a team of volunteers with American veterans who would like to record the stories of their wartime experiences.  These interviews will be edited into concise videos and available for viewing on the Museum website and other outlets such as Youtube.  The raw video will be retained by the Museum as well as the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project and made accessible to researchers and the general public.

All profits received from book sales between now and January 15th will be donated to the Museum to assist in raising the funds necessary to make this exceptional museum a reality.  If you would like to volunteer with the Wartime Oral History Project or have any questions about the Museum please feel free to contact me at gpass@nmaw.org.
